Proper Mowing Heights for Lawns

Choosing the right height to mow a lawn is good for business and the lawn. Many factors influence the decision as to the proper height for each lawn in your care. First is the predominate turfgrass growing in the lawn. Different grasses are bred to grow best within a certain range. Listed below are the standard mowing heights for commonly grown turfgrasses.

            Bahia                                      2 – 5 inches

            Bermuda                                0.125 – 2.0 inches

            Buffalograss                          1 – 2 inches

            Creeping bent                       0.125 – 1 inch

            Centipedegrass                    1 – 2 inches

            Fine fescues                          1 – 2.5 inches

            Kentucky bluegrass              0.5 – 2.5 inches

            Perennial ryegrass                0.5 – 2 inches

            St. Augustine                         2 – 4 inches

            Tall fescue                              2 – 3 inches

            Zoysia                                    0.5 – 3 inches
