Ecological Effects
Diquat dibromide, the active ingredient in the non-restricted herbicide, REWARD, has been in use without environmental concern for more than 25 years.
When used according to the label, REWARD poses virtully no environmental risks and will not contaminate groundwater. It is quickly deactivated once adsorbed by clay particles in the soil or lake sediment. The concentration of REWARD is low immediately after application and repidly decreases as it is adsorbed onto soil sediments, aquatic vegetation and organic matter. As a result of this rapid adsorption and binding of any REWARD remaining in the system, it is rendered biologically unavailable.
REWARD is an important tool in aquatic plant management when fish or game fish are present. The application rates of REWARD provide an adequate safety margin for adult and fry fish and other aquatic organisms. Because of its low toxicity, REWARD features the advantage of unrestricted fishing following application. |
Toxicity to Non-target Organisms
Diquat rapidly and strongly binds to soil particles. In aquatic environments, diquat is also adsorbed to suspended sediments, including clay particles. Once adsorbed, diquat dibromide is no longer bioavailable and the opportunity for exposure to non-target species is minimized.
Following labeled application rates, the window of opportunity for exposure to non-target organisms is small because of the rapid dissipation of diquat. |
Environmental Profiling
The toxicity of diquat dibromide has been extensively studied with more than 200 aquatic toxicity data points covering 26 species of fish and 20 species if aquatic invertebrates. Diquat is also rapidly excreted from organisms and does not bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms or cause biomagnification in food chains. Thus, when used according to label recommendations, diquat dibromide will not cause unreasonable risk to the environment. |
