Protect your Turf from Brown Ring Patch

Protect your Turf from Brown Ring Patch

Brown ring patch (Waitea Patch)
is a disease that primarily affects annual bluegrass and is becoming more common as each season passes. The causal pathogen Waitea circinata var. circinata is a member of the Rhizoctonia group of plant pathogens. Disease symptoms usually appear in spring or early summer when air temperatures approach 65-85°F (view the Soil Temperature Map for daily soil temperatures).  Infection results in the formation of yellow rings, a few inches to a foot in diameter, and turns brown and necrotic over time. The following guidelines and management practices are recommended to optimize the protection of your turf from brown ring patch.

Fungicide Applications
Preventive:
Depending on the climate and spring warm-up, applications should generally occur between March 15 and June 1.

Curative: Preventive applications are best, but depending on the fungicide; curative applications may also be successful. For more information, view results from Brown Ring Patch Trials at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club.
