Tenacity + Princep + Pennant Magnum: A Triple Threat for Goosegrass in Florida

Goosegrass is one of the toughest weeds in golf course turf. It is a prolific seed producer, germinates under a wide range of soil temperatures, matures quickly and thrives in compacted soils where the desired turf cannot compete. It would make an excellent playing surface, if it only had a better cold tolerance!

Effective goosegrass control requires a combination of pre- and post-emergent herbicides in a programmatic approach. This is particularly challenging in Florida where Monosodium methanearsonate (MSMA) is not available for post-applications, and where goosegrass can survive as a perennial in southern parts of the state.

To help golf course superintendents combat goosegrass, the state of Florida approved a 24(c) label for Tenacity® herbicide + Princep® Liquid herbicide + Pennant Magnum® herbicide on bermudagrass golf courses (except greens). This “triple threat” combination delivers excellent post-emergent control of goosegrass and pre-emergent activity to slow goosegrass re-emergence from seed. A number of other major weed species are controlled by this tank mixture, including signalgrass, Florida pusley, doveweed, crabgrass and yellow nutsedge.

For control of goosegrass and other labeled weeds in actively growing bermudagrass, make two applications of Tenacity at 5 to 8 fl. oz./acre + Princep Liquid at 15 to 25 fl. oz./acre on a 14-day interval. Include Pennant Magnum at 20.8 fl. oz./acre in the second application for pre-emergent control. Use higher rates for control of mature stands of perennial goosegrass and multi-tillered plants, or lower rates for less mature infestations. All applications should be tank-mixed with a non-ionic surfactant at 0.25 to 0.5 percent volume to volume (% v/v) of final spray solution to maximize performance.

Superintendents using Tenacity + Princep + Pennant Magnum must have a copy of the 24(c) label on file according to federal and state regulations. The 24(c) label can be downloaded here.

It is worth noting that this program induces mild to severe phytotoxicity on hybrid bermudagrasses, but full recovery typically occurs within 7 to 14 days, depending on weather conditions. This mixture can be highly injurious to certain common bermudagrass genotypes, so to demonstrate safety in your location, avoid applying without prior testing where common bermudagrass is the desired turf.
