Fusilade II Offers New Uses for Turf Managers

Although Fusilade® II herbicide has been registered for use on golf courses and residential turf for a number of years, recent label changes now allow for more flexibility in managing problematic grass weeds. Fusilade II is a selective post-emergence herbicide that inhibits fatty acid synthesis in grasses, leading to inhibition of cell membranes and development of new plant tissue. It is a relatively fast-acting systemic herbicide, in that growth of sensitive plants will slow within seven days of application. However, it may take three to four weeks for complete control of sensitive plants.

Plant selectivity is based on the ability of the herbicide to bind to the enzyme, catalyzing fatty acid formation. The enzyme in dicot plant species and a few monocot species are naturally resistant to Fusilade II. Fine fescues are extremely tolerant to Fusilade II, so selective control of many annual and perennial grasses in fine fescue is now possible.

Fusilade II is labeled for control of grass weeds, such as bentgrass and crabgrass, in fine fescue fairways, roughs and other areas on a golf course. Use rates are 16 fl. oz. per acre applied when the weeds are actively growing.

Another addition to the label is use prior to renovation of bermudagrass fairways. Combining Fusilade II and glyphosate to kill existing bermudagrass improves control over glyphosate alone. Apply Fusilade II at 24 fl. oz. per acre with 2-3 lbs. of acid equivalent per acre of glyphosate to control existing vegetation, particularly bermudagrass, prior to renovation. A second application is needed 28 days after the first application, or wait until any regrowth is evident. Treated areas can be sprigged seven days after application, but seeding must be delayed for 30 days.
