What to Consider Before Shipping Impatiens Walleriana

Impatiens walleriana have slowly, but surely, made their way back into the greenhouse since the downy mildew outbreak a few years ago. With recent fungicide innovations, there are more solutions available to combat this devastating disease before it spreads. As you prepare to ship impatiens, or other crops susceptible to downy mildew, one last application of Segovis® fungicide is recommended to help ensure strong landscape performance.

Recommendations from Michigan State
Michigan State University has conducted multiple research studies on downy mildew specifically. Led by Mary Hausbeck, these studies show that if impatiens are treated in the greenhouse with their recommended fungicides, the risk for a downy mildew outbreak in the landscape is significantly reduced or prevented entirely. They also found it is possible to successfully grow impatiens in landscape beds that have a history of impatiens infected with downy mildew.

Segovis is listed as the last treatment in MSU’s recommendation, to be applied shortly before impatiens leave the greenhouse. Regardless of whether impatiens will be planted in residential or commercial landscapes, Segovis will help protect them against downy mildew and secure their performance in the landscape in areas where the disease has been prevalent.

Prevent downy mildew from affecting impatiens in the landscape with an application of Segovis before shipping.
Key Benefits of Segovis
With a unique mode of action, Segovis is a valuable tool for growers to diversify rotation programs and manage resistance concerns. It also offers the following benefits:
  • Many labeled use sites: greenhouses, shade and lath houses, retail nurseries, outdoor nursery production and commercial landscapes
  • Four-hour REI (restricted-entry interval)
  • Ability to apply as a spray or drench
  • Low use rates and long residual control
  • Strong systemic activity
In addition to downy mildew, Segovis also controls aerial and soil-borne Phytophthora spp.

A Grower’s Experience
Jeff Walls, a grower at Kube-Pak, had a positive experience when he applied Segovis prior to shipping coleus. “When we saw signs of downy mildew on seed and vegetative varieties of coleus, we drenched with Segovis at the rate of 2.4 oz/100 gal. It cleared right up and we were able to ship the crop on time.”
