Recognition herbicide: A powerful, flexible tool for St. Augustinegrass and zoysiagrass lawns

By Lane Tredway, Ph.D., technical services manager for Syngenta

Recognition® herbicide is the latest exciting herbicide from Syngenta for use in certain warm-season grasses, including St. Augustinegrass and zoysiagrass lawns. Recognition contains the active ingredient trifloxysulfuron, a sulfonylurea herbicide that

controls sedge and kyllinga species in addition to many broadleaf and grass weeds. It also contains a proprietary safener called metcamifen, which enhances the tolerance of labeled turf species and enables unique tank mixtures to control a broader spectrum of weeds.

Recognition is particularly well-suited for St. Augustinegrass lawns where few weed control options are available. With Recognition, LCOs can achieve outstanding control of many common weeds, including yellow and purple nutsedge, kyllinga, dollarweed (lawn pennywort), spotted spurge, wild garlic, carpetweed and many more. The low rate of 1.29 oz./A is often recommended but increasing to the high rate of 1.95 oz./A improves control of Virginia buttonweed, bahiagrass, torpedograss and dallisgrass.

Bermudagrass control is finally possible

Recognition can be tank mixed with Fusilade® II herbicide (12-24 fl. oz./A) to selectively control common or hybrid bermudagrass with excellent safety to St. Augustinegrass or zoysiagrass turf. This mixture also provides excellent control of dallisgrass and goosegrass. Repeat applications on a four- to six-week interval may be needed depending on the severity of the infestation. Since these herbicides are foliarly absorbed, it’s best to wait until the target weeds begin to regrow before repeating the application.

Amp up your broadleaf weed control

In St. Augustinegrass turf, Recognition can be tank mixed with Turflon® Ester Ultra specialty herbicide at 8-16 fl. oz./A to control dollarweed with a single application and improve control of tough broadleaves like Florida pusley, matchweed and Old World diamond flower.
