If scouting reveals high ABW larval densities, time for larvicides to control the first summer generation of ABW

In central and northern New Jersey, scouting for larvae of the first annual bluegrass weevil summer generation should have already started and any necessary larvicide applications are impending. ABW populations currently consist of all stages from spring generation adults through large larvae of the first summer generation.

July 11 update ABW Activity in Virginia

As of the first week of July, annual bluegrass weevil populations were predominately in the large larvae, pupae, and new adult stages at two of the three Virginia golf courses sampled.

Ding! Ding! Round Two

In my visits to golf courses, populations of annual bluegrass weevils are asynchronous and have been since early June. Warmer temperatures speed up insect development and decrease the turf’s tolerance to feeding from insect pests.

Keep on holding off….for now

Currently, we are in a holding pattern in central Pennsylvania with a larvicide application. We are still seeing the occasional fourth and fifth instars, pupae from the first generation in our untreated fairways at the Country Club of Harrisburg.
