Clumpity Clumps...

Tall fescue clumps are quite obvious at this time. In cool season turfgrass lawns like Kentucky bluegrass these clumps are noticeable and unsightly to many homeowners. It is not uncommon to get numerous questions on how to control tall fescue. Non-selective herbicides like can be used as a spot spray but may produce an unsightly looking turf until the patches are re-established. Repeated applications of a non-selective herbicide may be required to completely kill the tall fescue during cool conditions of spring. A selective herbicide is available but appears to be most effective when applied in the fall. If the customers have not complained about the patches in the past or during the summer or fall, the clumps will become less noticeable once the rest of the grasses begin active growth.
