Winter Annual Weeds Emerging

Although with cooler to cold weather slowing turf growth down, winter annual and cool season weeds are actively growing in the southeastern United States. Weeds like henbit, chickweed, and dandelion are quite apparent in dormant and semi-dormant athletic fields.  Weed invasion is most prevalent in worn or open areas on athletic fields.   If these weeds are considered a problem and need to be treated, post-emergent herbicides can be applied. For best control the weeds need to be actively growing and air temperatures above 50 F.
