It’s almost large patch time… again?

By Lane Tredway, Ph.D., technical services manager, Syngenta

With the cool, wet weather we had during the spring of 2020, large patch activity was observed well into May or June in many locations throughout the south and transition zone. That could mean a short summer vacation for Rhizoctonia solani, which could be back in action by August or September with the right weather conditions. Now is the time to begin planning for preventive applications for this fall.

Protecting warm-season grasses from large patch through the fall and spring requires a powerful, long-lasting fungicide, and few products are up to the challenge. Syngenta is proud to introduce Ascernity® fungicide, an impressive option for large patch prevention that is now the cornerstone of our updated GreenTrust® 365 Large Patch Assurance Program.

Ascernity combines the advanced SDHI technology SOLATENOL® (benzovindiflupyr) with difenoconazole, the proven cooling DMI. This innovative solution makes Ascernity particularly strong against Rhizoctonia diseases like large patch, but also delivers excellent control of brown patch, anthracnose, dollar spot and many other diseases.

University of Arkansas Large Patch Trial

Source: Dr. Mike Richardson, University of Arkansas, 2015. Study performed on Cavalier zoysia matrella greens, 2014-2015. Three applications were made on Sept. 23, Oct. 20 and April 9, 2015.

Two fall applications followed by one spring application of Ascernity, all at 1 fl. oz./1,000 ft.2, have delivered outstanding control of large patch in trials throughout the south and transition zone. Compared to current standards, Ascernity delivers more consistent and longer-lasting control, both essential characteristics of a successful large patch product.

Large Patch Trials

Summary of eight trials in Arkansas, Georgia, Missouri, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee, 2015-2016. Trials performed on zoysiagrass and seashore paspalum. Treatments made preventively. Two applications were made in the fall on 28-day intervals, plus one application was made in the spring. Rates per 1,000 ft.2.

"We’ve seen consistent results with Ascernity, year in and year out, and that’s one of the most important things for superintendents that are trying to manage this disease. They just can’t have failures and breakdowns with their fungicide programs. That’s where Ascernity shined in our trials."
