Watch out for European pepper moth

Be on the lookout for moth activity in production, as it could be the infamous European pepper moth (Duponchelia fovealis). This lepidopteran pest can wreak havoc during production of herbaceous and woody ornamental plants. There have been recent reports of activity in poinsettia production. Unlike other lepidopteran pests which typically feed on foliage, Duponchelia larvae prefer to feed on plant stems at the soil line, so careful scouting of this area is important.

What to look for:
  • • Wilted plants
    • Loose webbing near the stem at the soil line
    • Girdling of the lower stem
    • Stem rotting due to feeding injury
