Fire ant control starts with planning now
By Lane Tredway, Ph.D., technical services manager for Syngenta
Warm, sunny spring weather brings many people outside to enjoy their favorite activities. Unfortunately, these conditions also awaken red imported fire ants that build mounds in turf areas, along sidewalks and in flower beds. While their mounds are unsightly, their painful and dangerous stings are the more serious threat posed by these pests.
Traditional approaches to fire ant control were not very effective. Mound treatments with fast-acting contact insecticides only control the colonies that are visible at that time, and many of the treated mounds eventually recover. Insect growth regulators, usually formulated as baits, can provide more complete control but take weeks or months to fully take effect. To provide both quick knockdown and effective control, Syngenta developed Advion® Fire Ant Bait.
These time lapse images show just how fast Advion fire ant bait can provide fire ant control. In just 72 hours, Advion fire ant bait achieved full colony control. Photos courtesy of Charles Barr, Barr Research and Consulting, College Station, Texas.
Unsurpassed speed with proven results
Advion fire ant bait provides a unique combination of speed and effectiveness that cannot be duplicated with any other product. Broadcast applications or mound treatments provide control of foraging worker ants within 12 to 48 hours and can provide total colony control
within 72 hours.
Advion fire ant bait takes advantage of the natural behavior of fire ants to ensure fast, effective results. It is highly attractive to worker ants, which aggressively harvest the granules and carry them into the colony to contaminate the food source. Unlike other products, Advion fire ant bait does not trigger an alarm response, which can result in colony relocation and reduced efficacy. The active ingredient is only bio-activated by the ant’s internal enzymes to release the effective form of the active ingredient once it’s been ingested.
David Sullivan, owner of Roach Coach, Inc. in Perry, Florida, chose Advion fire ant bait when he needed to control fire ants in a few days to prepare for a festival. In Sullivan’s case, the festival grounds were clear from fire ants within 48 hours and provided a comfortable environment for the attendees.
“With the way you spread Advion fire ant bait, the ants do all the work,” Sullivan explains. “They forage and take it back to wherever their hidden nest may be. With other products I’ve used, if you miss a mound, you still have ants.”
See how Advion fire ant bait provides total colony control, faster than other fire ant bait on the market, in the following comparison video.
Performance assessments are based upon results or analysis of public information, field observations and/or internal Syngenta evaluations.
For guaranteed season-long control of fire ants, make at least two applications of Advion fire ant bait with a broadcast spreader at 1.5 pounds per acre when populations are foraging.
The Advion Fire Ant Bait Guarantee Program is a great way to take advantage of the unsurpassed speed and unbeatable results of the product. Contact your Syngenta territory manager or Syngenta authorized distributor to learn more about the Advion Fire Ant Bait Guarantee Program.
More than just fire ants
Three formulations of indoxacarb are available for application in the landscape and provide flexible, broad-spectrum insect control:
- In addition to fire ants, Advion fire ant bait also controls common nuisance ants found in the landscape, including big-headed ants, pavement ants and turfgrass ants.
- Advion insect granule features a different bait formulation that controls mole crickets, several ant species (except fire ants) and common nuisance insects in the landscape such as crickets, earwigs, silverfish and cockroaches.
- As a spray application, Provaunt® WDG insecticide provides effective control of destructive caterpillars and certain other insects in both turfgrasses and landscape ornamentals.
Provaunt WDG, Advion fire ant bait and Advion insect granule can all play a role in helping you provide a safe and comfortable landscape for your customers. For more information, contact your local Syngenta territory manager.
