Quick guide: Take-all root rot in Ultradwarf bermudagrasses

By Lane Tredway, Ph.D., technical services manager for Syngenta

  • Issue: Take-all root rot is prevalent on ultradwarf bermudagrass putting greens, especially in the transition zone
  • Symptoms:
    • Patchy/ring-like appearance
    • Appears in late summer to fall
    • Can also manifest in winter or early spring during slow or semi-dormant growth
  • Challenges with curative control:
    • Bermudagrass recovery is slow during cooler months
    • Pathogens cause damage in summer but are not highly active when symptoms are present

Management Strategies
  • Curative approaches: Limited due to inactive pathogen and slow turf growth
  • Preventive approaches:
    • Protect turf from other stresses
    • Support recovery when growth conditions improve

Fungicide Applications

  • Tank mixtures for symptom breakthrough
  • Spring recovery support:
    • Product: Briskway® fungicide
    • Rate: 0.9-1.2 fl. oz./1,000 ft.2 for curative rates
    • Advantages: Effective against take-all root rot and other diseases without growth regulation
Preventive Measures
  • Timing: Initiate applications in late summer to fall when soil temperatures drop below 80 F.
